Definition of PPC:

PPC is pay-per-click. It is a traffic-driving tool for a blog or website. The advertiser pays according to the no of clicks on the ad.
PPC is also known as Google PPC because Google is the largest search engine. Google Adwords is the most common form of PPC ads.

How it functions?

Advertisers bid on related keywords or phrases and pay when clicked. Content sites charge a flat rate for the no of clicks.
The most common form of PPC advertisement is banner ads.

Types of PPC Ads:

Banner Ads:

These are shown on web pages with related content. These websites have agreed to display banner ads.
Example:
while searching for an air cooler through Indiamart.com, I found this ad of EasyWP on the right-hand side.

Sponsored Links or Sponsored Ads:

Sponsored Ads will display advertisements when the search query matches the advertiser’s keyword list.
If I search for the word “air cooler” in simple terms, ads will appear on the search engine result pages(SERP).
In this case, sponsored ads can be seen on the right-hand side of the SERP. The location of these ads can be modified to top, bottom, left, and right.

Use of PPC:

PPC is cost-effective and profitable in nature. If the advertiser’s main goal is to drive traffic to a specific destination, PPC ads are most useful.
Advertisers can measure the effectiveness of the ads.

Models of PPC Ads:

There are two primary models of Pay-per-click. One is flat rate based and another is Bid based.

Flat Rate:

Advertiser and Publisher agree upon a fixed amount for each click. The rate varies and depends on the content of the publisher.
publisher with reach content attracts valued customers. And they charge more than the regular publishers.

Bid Based:

Advertisers compete with other advertisers for a spot in the SERPs.A bid is done on keywords and top bidders appear at the top of the SERPs.
There can be multiple ads that appear in the SERPs.But one with the highest bid and quality score will rank first.
In this example, when I searched for Hosting, 4 ads appeared. But hostinger. appears first, so it is obvious that it is offering the highest bid.
